"Journeying together to share our Christian faith and the love of God with all"

Issue 52                                21st January 2012

It's two months since the last regular Peternews, and so much has happened since early November. Briefly running through them, we had the Autumn Fair on 19th Nov. raising £1281 for Church funds. This was followed by a superb concert by the Chippenham Male Voice Choir raising a further £546, Then we got into the Christmas season with the double Christingle raising £414 for the Children's Society; the Carol service produced £175 for the Bishop's Church Urban Fund, followed by the heart-warming Crib Service and Midnight Mass. The decoration of the Church was again so seasonal, and thanks are due to all who helped.

The Communications Survey (early December) produced 37 replies, and we are in the process of working out what it all means and how we might respond, but it is quite clear that the three favourite ways of communication are the Pulpit Notices, the Weekly Notice Sheet and this Peternews (that's nice to know; thanks). The PCC is due to debate this next week. The half-connected topic of the Christmas Peternews also has room for debate - not one comment, written or verbal, has been received - perhaps it was still-born?

The departure of Rachel Pound at Christmas has left a couple of holes in our Church community. Apart from us all missing her personal presence, the Ministry team is covering for her missed support in services. Again, Rachel looked after our Traidcraft operation, so we are looking for someone to run that. Otherwise, we may well have to run it down and shut up shop.

The Registers have been fairly quiet recently. On 12th November Sarah Whittaker and Andrew Littleford tied the knot, and we wish them every happiness in the future. Still in November we record the funerals of Rose Frampton (17th) and of Stanley Fuller (21st); we offer our condolences to the respective families and friends.

About 50 people took part in the Winter Workshop on 7th January. On offer were introductions to various activities: knitting - yes, knitting - especially knitted sheep for an Alison Love project later in the year (see weekly Notice Sheet); flower arranging - did you see how beautifully decorated the Church was the following day? Banner making - a small group is working on a couple of new banners for Church; Building a model church - a consideration of the purpose and requirements of a church whilst building a cardboard model- it's on display in the Narthex; how to play a guitar- Martin, Adrian and Rick showed what can be done (see Martin for lessons, and he is starting informal sessions on Saturday mornings); puppetry- the youth enjoyed this and gave a creditable performance which we all enjoyed at the end of the Workshop; there was a Caring Group discussing approaches to the pastoral care we provide; a quick guided tour (curtailed by time) is sure to prove popular next time. Next time? Everyone enjoyed this one so much that when Andrew suggested a follow up/repeat in 3-4 month's time, there was much enthusiasm. Watch this space!

Meanwhile, we are still short of Altar Servers - none came forward at the weekend. If the word "Server" puts you off, think of it as Waiting at Table, i.e. helping the priest at Holy Communion.

Waiting at table .... There is the social "Dinner for You" proposed for Saturday 11th February. This looks like a combination of Burns Night and a romantic Valentine Dinner. Check the Weekly Notices and the Narthex Noticeboard where there is a list to sign up.

Now is the time to start thinking about the Annual General Meeting. Annual reports from the Action Groups are required by15th March; there are 5 places on the PCC up for re-election and the posts of Church Warden are annual. The new Electoral Roll must be completed by 24th March. The PCC will tie up the final AGM details at its meeting of 26th March. Date of the AGM is Sunday 22nd April.

    School holidays are: Feb 10 - 20; Apr 30 - May 16; June 1- 11; July 20 - Sep 3; Oct 24 - Nov 5.

Our Aspire Dance Group is negotiating dance dates in local schools. There's outreach for you!

How about supporting Doorway (local homelessness project) in a sponsored Sleep-Out in St. Andrews churchyard on Saturday 28th January. Sounds spooky! Details on a leaflet in Church.

Also in Church is a yellow leaflet outlining the themes of Services up to Easter (8th April). On Ash Wednesday (22nd Feb) an evening service with Ashing is planned. Palm Sunday (1st April) will see a procession from Sheldon Road Methodist Church to St. Peter's for a joint service. Our 9.30 am services for 15th and 22nd April are being swopped _15th will be Communion, and 22nd will be Morning Worship incorporating the AGM.

The Diocese produces a monthly update to its website with news from across the Diocese. This is accessible via our own St. Peter's website www.saint-peters.org.uk or more directly via www.bristol.anglican.org . A quick look the other day showed a freshness I had not seen before.

- From Andrew-your Parish Priest:-

A fast start was made on the 1st day of the year: 8am Communion, a labyrinthine journey of prayer (lOam) and echoes of the Methodist Covenant Service in the evening. There was no let up for Epiphany with services midweek, for school, and then on Sunday with guests: Ron, a Canadian Story-teller,+ Chippenham Street-Pastors. The following Saturday, there was the Winter Workshop - see above. Now we are in the midst of Prayer for Christian Unity, and are looking forward to an innovative shared service with other churches at St Peter's: 4pm , Sun. 22nd Jan.

In the thick of the above activity it's easy to lose the longer-term view of God's activity/work with us. Our New Year motto (Revn 3.20) makes us aware of the Jesus who knocks on the door of this church, ready to dine with any who will dine with him. Firstly we're aware of God's presence, and then we open ourselves to receive ... Our call is to spiritual hospitality, and we cannot claim to honour or celebrate Jesus unless we also honour and celebrate the gift of our sister, brother or neighbour ...

But how? The PCC will talk further about first communion and deepening communion with Christ. Events for St Peter's at Home will help us grow as a family of faith, and in the near future why not join in {Dinner for You' with its Scottish Flavour 7pm, Sat 11th February in the Hall. (Sign up in church!) Pray as Martin seeks to expand the Aspire arts offering of St Peter's to include guitar tuition on Saturday mornings. And consider booking an Easter break with Revd Sam Rushton on the Llangasty Retreat, 13 to15th April, (Info from Martin).
